Second-Half Surge: Clemson Pulls Away From Radford 68-47 in Gritty Season Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. — High expectations can bring heavy pressure, and the opening night of the 2026-27 season gave the Clemson women’s basketball team a fierce, 20-minute reality check before their depth and defensive identity finally took over.

Entering his third year at the helm, head coach Shawn Poppie boasts a roster defined by experience, depth, and size. All of it was required on Monday night as Clemson weathered a brilliant punch from a championship-caliber mid-major opponent to secure a 68-47 victory over the Radford Highlanders.

Clemson wasted no time showcasing its offensive potential. Starting point guard Mackenzie Nelson ignited the home crowd early, burying a spectacular, high-difficulty three-pointer to beat the shot clock on the game’s opening possession. Nelson single-handedly piloted the Tigers' early offense, scoring seven of Clemson’s first nine points to rocket the team out to a commanding 9-0 lead.

Radford head coach Mike McGuire, whose squad was picked to win the Big South Conference, refused to let the game slip away early. McGuire adjusted beautifully on both ends of the court, engineering a defensive lockdown that allowed forward Angelina Nice to utilize her skill inside for back-to-back buckets.

The Highlanders slowly built momentum, capping off an intense first quarter with a buzzer-beating layup from guard Cherish Wood to slice Clemson's lead to 17-12.

By the second quarter, Radford was playing with an undeniable combination of confidence and effort. Pushing all the right buttons, McGuire’s squad completely erased the early deficit, taking a 23-21 lead with 2:59 remaining in the first half.

The two teams traded blows in a physical, back-and-forth sequence before Clemson forward Taliyah Henderson provided a crucial moment of baseline grit. Crashing the glass, Henderson collected an offensive rebound and scored on a putback with just 0.03 seconds left on the clock, sending the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 27-27.

Radford emerged from halftime intent on pulling off the upset. Guard Kailyn Fields silenced the arena by draining a corner triple, handing the Highlanders a 33-29 lead with 8:05 left in the third quarter.

But Clemson’s response was swift, definitive, and sparked by Junior forward Edie Clark. Clark put on an absolute clinic in consecutive possessions—first fighting for an offensive rebound and putback, and then trailing in transition to knock down a massive three-pointer. The five-point swing snatched the lead back for Clemson at 34-33 with 6:43 left in the period and permanently flipped the game's momentum.

From that moment on, Clemson's suffocating defensive length took the game over. The stops flew fast and furious, leading directly to easy buckets on the other end. Henderson, Meyah Green, and Holland Harris all fueled a dominant third-quarter display, outscoring Radford 22-10 in the frame to build a 49-37 cushion heading into the final 10 minutes.

"We got to get stops, and that leads to us playing faster in transition," Poppie remarked in the postgame press conference, pinpointing the exact tactical shift that saved the night.

The fourth quarter was a pure showcase of Clemson's depth wearing down an opponent. After a dogfight of a first half, Clemson outscored Radford 41-20 across the final two periods, locking up the 21-point victory.

For Radford, the loss takes little away from their outlook. They proved exactly why they are heavily favored to dominate the Big South this winter; their discipline and execution will win them a lot of basketball games.

For Clemson, this was the perfect early-season test. Winning ugly in November is the hallmark of teams that look deep into March. With their blend of size, guard play from Nelson, and defensive tenacity, this Tigers squad has the ceiling of a team that can comfortably play into the second weekend of the NCAA Tournament.
